Art has always been in my blood. I credit my grandfather, a muralist who painted for the Cuban railroad in the 1950’s, for instilling in me my love of art. While growing up in Cuba, my father was a welder for the railroad and sugar mill, and my mother owned a garage that serviced trucks and buses in southern Cuba. My fascination with machines and images of people working were an integral part of my childhood. Although formally trained as a school psychologist and educator, my aspirations continued in art and photography.
When I founded Ernesto Rodriguez Photography in 1988, creating pictures for industry seemed like a natural fit. The genius of machines and the people who work them continue to be a source of inspiration. Working for clients in oil & gas, maritime, construction, and transportation industries has fused my interests in art, people and machines, creating a rewarding profession.
Photography has brought me full circle, back to education. While shooting an assignment in the Netherlands, a friend approached me about teaching photography at Webster University in Amsterdam. The annual summer workshop I now teach on digital photography and impressionism stimulates me to stay on the edge of visual technology. It further affords me the opportunity to experiment with art and the creative process while sharing my techniques, experience, and passion with others.
